Life depends on small things…
Bug under glass is an ongoing series inspired by the small things that delight me. Tiny creatures like bats and moths may have spotted adoration from most people, but here we welcome the unloved and misunderstood.
Houston-based artist and graphic designer working in the area since 1998. Since, 2015, I have been focused on creating detailed paintings of insects, arachnids, and small mammals to help bring awareness and appreciation to the small detritus that help our world thrive. We would not be here without these creatures and I hope each time you see a curious bug, it sparks wonder and admiration for nature.
I’m the little one…
It was either artist or veterinarian and the idea of 8 years of college to become a vet was insane to my 7-year-old self, so I chose artist! Born in Houston, Texas I grew up in League City, in a very working-class home. My grandmother was very encouraging for me to become a creative as she saw I had a few gifts. I could memorize books well enough to pretend to read at 3 years old, loved commercials more than the TV shows we would watch, and drew on just about every surface, (at least once). I wasn’t going to be the gruff, shit-kicking kind of man that came before me in our family. We honored hard work like most American families, but unlike most families we valued knowledge. Knowledge is power and to not thirst to discover the world is weakness!

Bugs teach us that small things are important. So, while these small lives may not seem important, our planet would not be habitable to us without them.

Yes! Sure do. Each one is hand sketched and painted with a tiny brush and a lot of patience.
-
Absolutely! My commissions are currently open!
